What the obstetrician told me then is the great truth of Advent: my baby was not late; she was just not yet ready to be born. And God's coming is never late: God is here and is coming ever more fully as time ripens.
What lets time ripen?
Partly, it's our own readiness to carry God's presence. Women and men together, can we be pregnant with God's life?
From within, we feel the movement. Others can see the imprint of the foot pushing outward. Once in a while, the kicks from within can be painful. If we rest too long in one position, the life within may start a gymnastic event in order to get us moving again.
We know in part Who rests and moves within us. And we honor the mystery of all that we don't yet know. When time ripens into birth, the wonder of this Presence will be far more amazing than we can imagine.
This Advent and every day, may each of us feel the honor and the responsibility of being pregnant with God's life. May we carry God's presence toward an ever more complete birth.
And let's remember that this will happen in God's time -- first, because all time is God's time, and second, because God is never late, even if God's timing doesn't fit our schedule.
